Sword of Rênos

Rênos (or latin Rhenus also Rhenus Pater) is a Celtic / Germanic river god and the personification of the river Rhine. This sculpure is from the Wrangel Fountain in Berlin-Kreuzberg which was drafted by Hugo Hagen and erected in 1877. It seems to be the only depiction of Rênos with a sword (?). Remember that the Franco-Prussian war and the foundation of the German empire was only 6 years before... The three other sculptures at this fountain are the river goddesses Vistula, Oder and Elbe.

crossing the river

This is a view of the old railway bridge across the Oder river near the village of Tschirne (Czernica) in Silesia (Poland). The village of Tschirne got a railway connection to Breslau (today Wroclaw) in 1909 and there was a precursor to this iron construction. This bridge was built in 1935 by the Germans and then destroyed in 1945 during the German withdrawal from Silesia. It was rebuilt in 1959 by the Polish. Click for a black background.

as if it was yesterday...

I don't know what this bowl at the Chacmultun archeological site was used for. Maybe for grinding corn (probably) or for washing... But it looks as if it has been in use by the Maya yesterday, not a thousand years ago! Note: This image was scanned from a slide with Hamrick Vuescan on a Reflecta Crystalscan 7200 (Primefilm PF 7250 U).

Maya Games

CHICHÉN ITZÁ: The ball court was a central place in every Maya city (Chichen Itza had eight of them). And the ball game was supposed to be a ritual or spiritual game. There is the story that the winner - not the loser - was capitated afterwards, but this is probably a fairy tale. This ball court in the aya-Toltec city of Chitchen Itzá is especially well decorated with figures (formerly in colors probably). The small ball had to be moved with sticks into the upper ring.... Note: This image was scanned from a slide with Hamrick Vuescan on a Reflecta Crystalscan 7200 (Primefilm PF 7250 U).
